Description of Tournament: A USCF rated Individual and Team Scholastic Championship
Games are played in five sections: Primary (K-2), Elementary (K-5), Middle School (K-8), High School (K-12) and Novice section K-12 (no USCF membership required). There is a total of 30 minutes maximum per player per game.

On-site registration and check in 8:30am-9:30am. All players must check in by 9:45am. Later arrival will receive a ½ point bye for the first round.

Round schedule: 10:15am -11:30am-1:15pm and 2:30pm

UIL Invitational Puzzle-Solving at 12:30pm.

Entry Fees: $10 received by 9/16; $15 received by 9/22, or on site $20. A valid USCF membership required in all sections, except Novice K-12. It can be obtained at www.uschess.org or onsite on 9/24 until 10am. The entry for the UIL Puzzle Solving is $5.

Prizes: Trophies for top 3 finishers in each section. Trophies to top 3 school teams in each section.

Special valuable chess prizes to the top overall finisher in each section sponsored by the Susan Polgar Foundation! Team prizes are based on the top 3 individual scores from the same school within the same section. Also special trophy for top Sibling, top Parent/Child and top Coach/Student teams. Approximately 75 players, from ages 6 to 60-plus, took part in the first chess tournament of 2011 in Lubbock, the seventh “Get Smart! Play Chess!,” this past Saturday at the Science Spectrum.

In addition, approximately 30 students took part in the first ever UIL Chess Puzzle Solving Invitational that took place between rounds two and three.

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Lubbock area students were encouraged to "Get Smart Play Chess" which was the title of Saturday's event hosted by SPICE of Texas Tech. SPICE is short for Susan Polgar Institute for Chess Excellence. Participants ranged in age from kindergarten, up through high school, with trophies awarded to top finishers.

Program director and Chess Grandmaster, Susan Polgar, says chess opens-up a world of opportunity for children. Saturday's event comes just before many of the world's most prestigious chess players arrive for SPICE Cup 2010. It is the highest rated international invitational tournament, and it will be right here in Lubbock, next week.

The fourth "Get Smart! Play Chess!" Winter Scholastic Chess Championship was held on Jan. 23 at the Lubbock Science Spectrum. The event drew around 100 players - ages 6 to older than 60 - from Lubbock, San Angelo, Amarillo, and Midland, etc.

The players fought hard for four rounds. However, players managed to have a blast exploring the exciting exhibits between rounds. Some even enjoyed an IMAX movie after the tournament.

This is a wonderful collaboration among Texas Tech SPICE, the Knight Raiders, the Susan Polgar Foundation, and the Science Spectrum. I am hoping to partner up with more local businesses in the future to provide more activities, excitement, and benefits to our community.

The first-ever Get Smart! Play Chess! tournament was held at the Science Spectrum. About 85 players took part in this very exciting event at a wonderful venue.

Even though most of the players are from the local areas, some came as far as Odessa and Albuquerque.

All participants received either free passes to the museum or tickets to the IMAX Theater.

This event was a collaboration among SPICE, Lubbock Science Spectrum, the Knight Raiders and the Susan Polgar Foundation.

• New Atrium Chess Club: The club meets 5-6:30 p.m. Wednesdays at the Science Spectrum.

This will be a time for kids and their parents to get together to play chess and learn informally with other kids and their parents. There is no charge, but kids should have a parent/responsible adult with them.

Monica and Abbie will be on site to supervise. Some of the Knight Raiders Chess Club members and I will drop in from time to time to help out.

Please note that the museum itself closes at 5 p.m. We get to use the atrium area.

We hope this will give the kids a chance to practice, play and learn the rules so that they can participate in upcoming events. Even if tournaments are not your thing, they can develop their game.

Two of the most talented young American talents, 14-year-old International Master Ray Robson and 18-year-old International Master Robert Hess, will take part in the second-highest rated international double round robin tournament in the United States this year. The highest rated event is the 2009 SPICE Cup, which will also take place at Texas Tech this fall.

Ray and Robert are both aiming to earn the needed Grandmaster norms to obtain their Grandmaster titles. Please check the SPICE Web site for the exact time of each round. Don't miss your opportunity to meet the chess stars.

Description of Tournament: A USCF rated Individual and Team Scholastic Championship and Open tournament.

Games are played in five sections: Primary (K-2), Elementary (K-5), Middle School (K-8), High School (K-12) and Open Section.

• Susan Polgar World Open for Boys and Girls

The Susan Polgar World Open for Boys and Girls will take place at the Las Vegas International Chess Festival, June 4-7 at the South Point Hotel and Spa. There will be more than $150,000 in college scholarships and chess prizes.
