Hungarian International Master Gergely Antal, a senior at Texas Tech University, won the 2009 World Chess Live Tournament of College Champions.

The Knight Raiders chess team member beat the defending national champion and three players from the University of Texas at Dallas – considered one of the nation’s top collegiate chess programs — to claim Texas Tech’s first national title in chess.

Antal drew International Master Jacek Stopa of UT Dallas in round three. He defeated International Master Daniel Fernandez of UT Brownsville in round four, and then International Masters Salvijus Bercys and Marko Zivanic – both from UT Dallas – in rounds five and six to win the championship.

The Swiss-style tournament, held in conjunction with the U.S. Open chess championship in Indianapolis, is open to all college students. The championship section is open to all players rated 2100 or better.

Antal, along with fellow Knight Raiders Stephanie Ballom and Josh Osbourn, are now competing in the U.S. Open, which continues through Aug. 9.
